The natural park „Rilski manastir“ is part of the highest
mountain on the Balkan peninsula – the Rila mountain .
Its teritory falls completely in the munisipalty of Rila.
The area of the park is 25 020 hectares of forests, high-mountain meadows,
alpine areas, high peaks and exciting scenaries in the heart of the mountain .
“Rilski manastir“ was proclaimed a natural park in June 2000 and since
then has been an unseperatable part of the National park „Rila“.
Especially remarcable is the region around Kirilova polyana
with its beautiful rocky rainbow which includes the peaks Zliya Zab, Iglata,
Kupenite, Lovnitsa, Orlovets and Elenii vrah.The whole mountainside to the
valley of the Rilska river is cut by a lot of steep gullies which are a
precondition for avalanches and often rockfalls.Some of them are well-known
like Beliya uluk, Dylgiq uluk, Vranika.The three of them are also
known as Zlite potoci..
On the teritory of the park there are 28 glacial lakes.
The park is surrounded by 36 peaks with an altitude of over 2000meters
On its area is located the world famous Rila monastery, included
in the treasure of UNESCO. The monastery is a stronghold of the bulgarian
orthodox fate, the public worship, oflanguage and literature and a centre of
religious and educational activities. Founded at the beginning of the Xth
century by the Saint Ivan Rilski, now the monastery and its
surroundings are a source of national pride, a centre of all orthodox christians
and a centre of spiritual purge.
